Giant Baby is one of the finest humans I’ve ever encountered. His energy is so warm and gentle.
I think one of the things you can be proudest of is the fact that he was raised in such a beautiful way that his gentleness wasn’t squashed out of him by the toxic BS boys grow up with.
You saw him and you honored his spirit. You done good, mama bear.
What a wonderful story; thank you. I too have a stand-out kiddo, although for a reason different than size. Being him, being his parent was hard when he was a child. Everyone else expected things from him that were not fair to ask of a child. Mine is now graduating college; yours is in it. While our boys have grown into their goodness with little choice, I will also say the more mature societies they now inhabit should be and are more accepting. And some men are worth keeping in the woods. Our boys will be two of them.
As always, in this post and others you offered several different viewpoints, and the many facets of the man vs. bear question. I even appreciated some differing opinions from the comments. Lots to take in and apply to each of our lives and history. One thing for sure is that you are an awesome mother and woman and human. Happy Mothers Day! Rock on!
I am a mother of boys and this is a lovely, just lovely. Thank you for illustrating the other side, from one bear mom (6 foot 5 inches, 230) to another.
Steph, I love you and GB, but I think you also know why this hits home for me. I am so glad that GB didn't have to take in quite the amount of toxic male bullshit I did in the 80s, but the tightrope of "protective-but-not-scary-and-gentile-but-is-he-Lenny-from-'Of Mice and Men'" is the thinnest of strings. Empathy and kindness do a lot, but I wear a rainbow bracelet at all times so people might read my Norse tattoos differently. I lean back when I tell stories, and lean on things while listening to not seem so big. I will either slow my pace behind a woman walking, or simply cross the street so no one is afraid. I love you for writing this, and am gladly sharing it to spread the word.
An aware bear. Such a sharp, cuddly and precise phrase. As much as I want to rage at that kindergartner and those casually cruel sideline parents, I know he's right where his monk's mind is destined to be. Love everything about this. xoxo
All the feels .

Sure do love that kid of yours.
You are the best. This should be printed, framed, and passed on to your grandchildren as evidence of how cool Nana was.
I'm Omi!
:)

Love this, thanks RLBB!
The tears drip down my face. What a wonderful person.

It is not surprising in the least that you raised an amazing human! Thank you for being, and raising a wonderful one.

You and he are certainly cut from that same cloth, have long thought that. XO
Love when he’s on the podcast with you. His voice even sounds gentle!
and heart of a champion...love that kid and you, mama xo
This is beautiful. As a mother of 2 girls I'd like to tell all of the moms of aware bears, I'm so grateful for the men you're raising.
😭💖🧸

Right? Like a case study in how you see a soul on its track, honestly. No surprise that he's a Religious Studies/Gender Studies major.
You’ve captured your Bear beautifully, and we love him nearly as much as our own huggable bear-child who had the audacity to grow up. 🥰
The nerve. :)
